The do it yourself dilemma

As I get older – pushing 40 now real fast – and my kids inch closer to the dreaded teenage years, I find that it’s easier to make the decision not to try and do a do it yourself project that I have no business doing.

Make sense?

Let me explain… Sure, I cut and nailed in all the wood trim after we (my wife and my brother-in-law) put in a Pergo floor in our living room.

But the trim was a pain to install. It took me a whole day! Not to mention the horrible job I did with all the nails that I couldn’t get to go in all the way so they’re sticking out of the trim. Nice look. Bugs me every time I look at the trim.

Should have hired a pro.

Sure, I’ve painted my kids’ bedrooms a few times but each time it’s taken several hours, not counting the cleanup, because I’ve always managed to blob repeatedly on the ceiling or on the carpet, making it much more of a mess than it needed to be.

I learned my lesson on that one. When we wanted to paint our main rooms…

We hired a pro.

Just because you can change a headlight bulb in your car, it doesn’t mean you can replace the brakes.

Just because you can build a shelf in the garage out of 2×4’s and plywood, doesn’t mean you can build a four season porch add-on to your home.

I know that many of you reading this have dabbled in learning to edit your home video. You may even be getting good at it. That’s great! I hope you have enough time to keep it up.

But no matter what your skill level, I can save you the time. I can add professional editing experience to your projects. I can add creativity that comes from the passion I bring to telling your story. Your video is as important to me as it is to you.

When it comes to video, hire an experienced (and affordable!) pro.

New look for my Web site

Just spent some time moving my main Web site for Kevin Hunt Video from iWeb to a site on the popular Web-building Weebly site.

Long story short, I was frustrated with the iWeb application in the iLife suite from Apple. If they can find a way to make it less of a hassle for people on PC’s to see the correct fonts, in the correct places, etc… it could be a good tool.

Right now, it’s not.

So, I’m wild about Weebly. And it will help me serve you better, with a cleaner and easier to navigate Web site.

Customer service, my way

I’ve got a simple philosophy when it comes to customer service.

I never want my customers to feel the way I’ve felt over and over again from hotels, airlines, restaurants, satellite TV/cable and on and on. I trust you know the feeling from the culprits on that list.

One of my most recent bits of fun came during a trip my family took to the largest waterpark/hotel in Wisconsin Dells, in mid-May. I won’t bother naming it because I’d prefer not to get another call from them, offering to “make it up to me” with a pathetic “gift” to get me to drive back to the Dells. In this era of $4 a gallon gas, the “gift” is less than what I’d pay in gas.

Seriously.

Anyway, I was upset that one of their indoor waterpark attractions was closed for reconstruction, despite it being advertised on their Web site without any mention of that closure.

And, when I asked a couple lifeguards if that particular attraction would be open during my family’s visit I was met with blank stares, as if I was speaking, well… English.

Clearly they weren’t from this continent.

Long story short, I complained and got the “explanation”. I told the management that advertising the attraction on the Web without any indication that it wasn’t even available would be like me advertising a product/service on my Web site and saying… “Uh, sorry… I don’t do that anymore.”

Nice.

So they offered me a $100 gift card and an apology.

Again, I think the summer room rate is at least $150, and it’ll cost me a good chunk of my day job paycheck to drive there and back.

No thanks. I can tell you with 100% certainty that I will never stay at that waterpark/hotel again.

Plain and simple… Customer service is about doing things right in the first place. And making things right if the customer feels shortchanged. Is that so hard?

Now, don’t make me tell you how clueless DirecTV was when I recently left them for Dish Network. That’s a story for another post.

Big blast from my past

I was going through some of my old VHS tapes from my stint as a TV news photojournalist in college in Wisconsin and I found a moment I’ll never forget.

It’s 15 years later, so why not put it on YouTube, right?

Some helpful advice for would-be sideline videographers – don’t just keep your eye on the ball, so to speak.

Remember that someone’s trying to tackle the guy with the ball. And they hit really hard.

Have a look:

Ouch.

I love how YouTube immediately gives you a sampling of other proud moments in sideline video at high school football games after you watch my clip!

I’m just glad that kid didn’t break that video camera. I remember walking into the newsroom that night – with a slight limp – and telling the sports anchor what happened. He made sure to show that clip a couple times in his highlights.

And here it is on the Web, 15 years later!
